Cat training using a Clicker
Clicker training is a technique of rewarding the cat if it learns a command or a trick. This training method is related to operant conditioning and classical condition. The operant conditioning is where the cat does something you say to get its favorite snack and the classical conditioning is where the cats relate the food with the sound.
Unlike the sound that we humans produce, the clicker has a noise that has the capability to let the cats relate to good behavior. During the initial stages of training, the cat could possibly confuse with themselves with the way you deliver the command. This situation could be resolved with the help of a clicker. Also, clickers are helpful when taking your cat out for a walk because the clickers keep the cats from getting distracted by other animals.
The cat could be trained in three simple steps using a clicker:
-
Get the behavior
-
Mark the behavior
-
Reinforce that behavior
When working to get the behavior of the cat, it should be given a treat on each click. Let our intention be making it jump a hoop. As the first step, your cat should be trained to come to you to get its snack upon each click. The next step is to mark the behavior. Here, you make the cat jump the hoop when it touches it by clicking and then providing it with its snack if it jumps. This could be repeated until the cat gets the command clearly and could jump the hoop even without your command.
Thus clicker training is very efficient and they even make the cat healthy if used to make the cat do some exercises. Such training also proves to give you and your cat much joy.
