Leash training your cat

Leash training a cat is just like other training methods and this needs more patience and practice. Since all cats are naturally sensitive, they start fearing you for life even if you use force on them once.

Before commencing with the training, you have to change your attitude towards the cat. Be polite and soft with the cat, accept its behavior easily, and train them with care. Use soft ways of calling it and even while chiding it. A very good way to train them is by giving them rewards after they exhibit good behavior. Do not present the dinner as the reward for the cat. A reward must be in small amounts and should never be substituted for its dinner.

Whenever you train your cat to be accustomed to a particular behavior like usage of leash, continue it until the goal is reached. Stopping it mid way can confuse the cat and can create stress in it. In case, your training becomes the cause for your cat’s stress or sickness, stop the training immediately and take care of your cat well. If your cat gets ill for any other cause, do not stop the training completely since they tend to forget the trained behavior. So, minimize the time for training but continue it steadily at a slow pace.

Always use a light and short leash while you take your kitten for a walk. A long leash may allow the kitten walk far off from you and may result in other dangers. Instead, a short one makes it attached to you and feel secure.

While applying the harness on the cats, allow the cat to get used to it within the house. Once it accustoms to it, you are free to take it for a walk outside your house. After the cat is completely ready, practice it outdoors slowly. Make sure that it is not let free completely since there are chances that they run away.
